Harlem Townhouse
With a two-story addition added to an existing four-story townhouse, a full redesign and gut renovation was undertaken for a family of five. To contrast the clients' minimalist perspective, the decision was made to expose the structure, HVAC system, sprinklers, and new steel stairs through the house's center. In doing so, the two languages exist in juxtaposition to create a detailed, modern home full of character. The open floor plan is connected vertically through the steel center stringer stair and screen clad with reclaimed, 200-year-old white oak taken from a barn just outside of Pennsylvania. This accent piece is articulated with custom lighting on an exposed brick wall that extends throughout the stairwell.
